trip description for Key West Lobstering - 30’ Seahunter in Key West

This trip is only offered during lobster season, August 6 - March 31. If you're looking to mix it up out in Key West, this trip has your name on it! On this Lobstering trip—perfect for families—you'll use nets and "tickle sticks" to bag Spiny Lobsters, which are a blast to catch and even better to eat. Catching Lobsters takes a little practice, but once you've done it once, you'll never forget it. Captain Hunter can give you all the expert tips, but it's a simple task: use your tickle stick to coax the Lobsters into your net without letting them swim away, because if they decide to take off, they're surprisingly speedy. Once they're netted, you can swim back to the surface and throw that bug on ice! Captain Hunter provides the nets and sticks, but you'll need to bring along your own snorkel, scuba mask, fins, and gloves if you choose to wear them. These pieces of equipment are essential, so come prepared! For everything else, the captain has it covered. Just remember sunscreen (no spray please) and a pair of sunglasses to cut the glare. The Lobsters are out there—get out there and get after it! Read More

The wrecks around Cudjoe Key are home to Grouper, Cobia, Kingfish, and Barracuda, while the reefs hold Yellowtail, Mutton, and Mangrove Snapper. The flats offer a unique challenge for those seeking to quietly stalk elusive Bonefish and Permit, as well as the chance to battle the Silver King. Offshore fishing for Tuna and Billfish is also exceptional in these waters.

Even a short afternoon on the water can be productive at Cudjoe Key, with half-day reef excursions yielding plenty of excellent tasting fish, especially during the summer months. However, those targeting flats species should allow for extra time, as patience is required. Full-day offshore expeditions typically produce the best results.

Cudjoe Key is split into northern and southern portions by US Highway 1, with the majority of development located in the south around Cudjoe Bay. This makes it easy for visiting anglers to find charters and quickly locate their captain for the day, with easy access to any fishing spot desired.

For anglers fishing aboard a charter boat, licenses are covered by the captain. However, those exploring the local flats and inshore waters alone must obtain a Florida fishing license ahead of time to comply with regulations.

With two oceans touching Cudjoe there is no shortage of fish to catch. The keys are known for variety, and that holds true for the inshore fishing here. In the channels and backcountry waters for snook and reds, on the gulf side as well as bonefish on the Atlantic side. Starting in the early spring, bonefish make their way into the flats and bays around Cudjoe Key and stay all summer long. Permit will show up on either side like trout, which will hold up in the grass flats.

A little later in the spring, tarpon swarm the bays and channels around the Island. Tarpon hang out in shallow waters from the backcountry to the bridges where you also have a shot at sharks and grouper. With enough variety for several trips, the inshore fishing in Cudjoe Key is world-class.

Cudjoe Key Deep Sea Fishing Charters

Head past the reefs on the Atlantic side and you will be in marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, and blackfin tuna feeding grounds. Mahi-mahi are also commonly caught here and can even be caught closer in. Offshore on the gulf side means catching cobia while trolling or dropping bait for snapper and grouper species. The difference in fish species between the two sides of Cudjoe Key can be confusing but regardless of what side you choose for your trip, this is a magical place to wet lines.

Had a most excellent time. We were scheduled for an offshore trip but wind and waves caused us to cancel this trip. However, we rescheduled for later in the day for a tarpon fishing excursion. This was a blast ! We saw sharks up close and landed several yellow jacks which gave us a good fight before being returned to the water. After trying and trying (never give up) we snagged a good sized tarpon. After a good fight which included multiple boat maneuvers it was brought to the side of the boat before being cut loose to fight another day. We thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with the captain and first mate. Both were very attentive to us, making sure that our hooks were still baited and that we had all the help required for landing and documenting our catches before returning them to the water. A great time was had by all! The boat was immaculate and we had no issues if any sort.

Lynn E. with Steve S. of Marathon, Florida

  • ★★★★★
Mike and Cole were fantastic. We had four small kids with us, and they handled them perfectly. We caught lots of yellowtail snapper and a nurse shark! 10/10, would book again (and plan to).

Daniel K. with Mike W. of Stock Island, Florida

  • ★★★★★
Great experience with Captain Mike. Enjoyed our time on the water and caught an amazing meal of Yellowtail! Thank you Blind Squirrel and crew!
