trip description for 6-8 Hour Offshore - 28' Seafox in St. Augustine

Head out for a trip to remember as you venture off the coast of St. Augustine with Captain Troy! On this 6 to 8-hour fishing trip you'll be aboard a comfortable 28' Seafox sportfisher that can go up to 60 knots, capable of doing some intense trolling or getting you to a bottom fishing spot in a hurry. Trolling the open waters can produce hard fighting species like Cobia, Amberjacks, Kings (King Mackerel), Wahoo, Sailfish, Mahi, Jack Crevalle, Tripletails and even Sharks. Trolling trips are great because the boat and the knowledge of your captain take care of half the work for you. You get to sit back, relax, enjoy the sweet sea breeze, and rest your arms while you wait for the reel to start screaming and your work to begin. Bottom fishing changes the target species to an entirely different set of fish. You can expect delicious and hard-fighting reef species here; massive Goliath Grouper, amazing Trigger fish and the ever popular Red Snapper are just a few of the species encountered by anglers in St Augustine for as long as fishermen have been reeling fish in from the ocean bottom. No matter the technique Captain Troy simply thinks like a fish and will show you how to hook into them. You won't be surprised to hear that he has won half the fly fishing tournaments he's been in. Don't worry about not being prepared, as everything you need for a successful fishing adventure will be on board, including a bathroom. Captain Troy supplies all bait, tackle, gear and fishing licenses. All you need to bring is appropriate clothing for Florida's climate and polarized glasses. Read More

Kayak fishing is an extremely fun way to hook a new personal best; kayaks are totally silent, barely disturb the water, and allow you to access the skinniest water down here in St. Augustine! No matter the technique, Troy knows how to "think like a fish" and will show you how to hook into some big ones. Meet-up locations depend on the time of year, tides, weather, and where you're staying. Book a trip now and see all that St. Augustine has to offer! Read More

Ponte Vedra Beach Fishing Overview

Ponte Vedra Beach is located on both banks of the St Johns River which empties into the Atlantic 20 miles from downtown. Fishing in Ponte Vedra Beach is incredibly productive with more than 1110 miles of interior shoreline, the St. Johns River, and easy access to offshore waters. With convenient water access everywhere you turn, Ponte Vedra Beach has plenty of options to cast a line no matter what type of fishing you choose.

Ponte Vedra Beach Freshwater Fishing

As you head further up the St. Johns River it changes to brackish and then freshwater. This is where you can expect to find bass, crappie, and catfish with great success. With Lake George and Crescent Lake both in close proximity to Ponte Vedra Beach, there are ample freshwater fishing opportunities. Lake George is well known for its largemouth bass but it’s the striped bass fishing that makes it stand out. With endless fishing spots and a variety of species to catch, Ponte Vedra Beach is a great place to take a freshwater fishing trip.

Ponte Vedra Beach Inshore Fishing

Starting from the Intracoastal off of Timucuan and Fort George Island, you'll have plenty of spots to explore while targeting inshore species. The inshore fishing opportunities in Ponte Vedra Beach are incredible with easy access to marshes, flats, and jetties while targeting amazing gamefish. Numerous inshore species reside here including trout, redfish, Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, black drum, jacks, tarpon, snook, and flounder. While most of these species are abundant throughout the year, each species has a peak season either when they feed on a seasonal food source or the giants come in to spawn.

Starting with cool water temperatures, the largest black drum are caught in the spring when they pour into the inlets. The warmer summer water bring on the flounder, tarpon, and mackerel bite with redfish and trout hitting hardest in the fall. Sheepshead move in during the winter months where they form tight groups near structure making them easier to target.

Whether you want to target one species or just relax and catch a mixed bag, you can do it with an inshore fishing trip to Ponte Vedra Beach.

Ponte Vedra Beach Offshore Fishing

Offshore fishing out of Ponte Vedra Beach provides plenty of opportunities to catch a wide variety of prized sportfish. Take a short boat ride to open water and you will have a decision to make. Troll for kingfish, cobia, marlin, sailfish, and mahi-mahi, or deep drop for snapper and grouper species over structure. In addition, the area is home to the biggest wahoo tournament in the world, the Northeast Florida Wahoo Shootout.

A normal trolling assortment of rods and outriggers is preferred for kingfish, cobia, and mahi-mahi but in Florida, they kite fish for monsters. This unique approach of attaching a trolling line to a kite that flys behind the boat is used to catch tuna, billfish, and wahoo.

With offshore fishing in Ponte Vedra Beach being so productive it’s a tough decision to make. Contact Captain Experiences to book a charter and get in on the action next February/March.

Other Things to Do in Ponte Vedra Beach

Ponte Vedra Beach is close to Jacksonville which is the largest city in Florida so it’s safe to say there is no shortage of things to do. A trip to the ocean isn’t complete without spending some time on the beach and there are plenty. Three of the most popular beaches include Mayport Beach, Neptune Beach, and Atlantic Beach, all of which have beautiful white sand. If sightseeing is more your speed then head out and see Fort George or experience exotic animals at The Catty Shack Wildlife Sanctuary. With a seemingly endless list of bars and restaurants to choose from, Ponte Vedra Beach is sure to please.

Recent Reviews of Captain Experiences

  • ★★★★★
I set up a fishing trip with Captain Mike as part of my buddies bachelor party and could not have asked for a better experience. Capt. Mike was extremely professional and was an excellent guide. He personally reached out to me a few days before our scheduled departure to check in and see if I had any questions and give me more details. The morning of the trip Captain Mike had everything set up and waiting for us when we arrived to the dock. I was very impressed with how organized he was. The Captain wasted no time getting us on fish and the entire group started reeling them in one after the other. At the conclusion of the trip Captain Mike cleaned all of the fish we caught and bagged up the filets for us to take home. I would highly recommend Captain Mike to everyone. My buddies and I had a great time!

Nathan J. with Mike W. of St. Augustine, Florida

We enjoyed our fishing trip with Mike. His boat is comfortable, safe and can go in the skinny water. Fishing was off for everyone this afternoon, but Mike worked diligently to produce. We caught a few nice fish and had a wonderful ride on a beautiful day.

Captain Don is truly a 5 star fishing guide. He's a better guy. I've been fishing for over 50 years, and as I hoped, Captain Don showed me several ticks and trips I'd never seen. No matter your experience level, he has something to help. We had a great day on the water, and had a great conversation. Darn fish just kept bugging us though.

Dan D. with Don T. of Jacksonville, Florida

We had a great time with captain frank. Due to the storms that rolled in weeks prior to our trip and a nor' easter, we had to make due with the areas we had available to fish. The booking process was very easy and we enjoyed our time on the water.

Magan J. with Frank C. of Jacksonville, Florida

  • ★★★★★
Best fishing day ever! We told Captain Troy we were serious about getting "keeper" fish to eat, and he did not disappoint. A full 12-hour trip into the Atlantic got us 46 delicious keepers (variety of snapper species, Jacks, Cobia, trigger fish, and more) with plenty of non-stop action, thanks to Troy's laser-focus on the fish. He provided good coaching on the best methods to drop our lines and haul up the bounty. He kept the boat on top of fish continuously, and had us haul up our lines as the boat drifted off so he could reposition the boat back over the fish. We literally spent no time at all just hanging out waiting for bites in an empty ocean. He knows some good spots; for the most part we were the only boat on the water as far as the eye could see; we only noticed a couple of other boats wander over toward us in one location. Action also included fighting with one or two giant groupers (line snapped off before we could get them to the boat) and a couple of small sharks. It got exciting when we had to quickly haul in a snapper to save it from the jaws of an impressive 6-foot hammerhead. Overall an exciting, successful, exhausting day on the water from sunup to sundown. Enjoyed grilled Cobia and Jack kabobs for dinner that evening.

Mary Lee F. with Troy J. of St. Augustine, Florida

Our 6-hour in-shore fishing trip with Captain Billy was such a great time! He's definitely done his fair share of charters and we were lucky enough to catch quite a few fish. He followed all sizing restrictions and made sure we were on fish at every spot we went to. After, he showed us the proper way to clean fish. We will most definitely do another charter with him in the future.

Ileana W. with Bill P. of Jacksonville, Florida
