What is kingfish fishing in Marathon all about?

Kingfish, also known as king mackerel, are a popular target for anglers in Marathon, Florida, offering thrilling battles and delicious table fare. These sleek and powerful pelagic predators are known for their blistering runs and impressive size, making them a prized catch among offshore fishermen. In Marathon, kingfish can be found patrolling the nearshore waters, reefs, and offshore structures, providing anglers with ample opportunities to hook into these formidable game fish.

One effective technique for targeting kingfish in Marathon is trolling with rigged baits or artificial lures. Anglers carefully pace their boats along underwater structures, reef edges, or drop-offs where kingfish are known to congregate. By varying trolling speeds and adjusting lure presentation, fishermen increase their chances of enticing strikes from these fast and aggressive predators. With their sharp teeth and lightning-fast strikes, kingfish provide anglers with exhilarating battles and the chance to land a trophy-worthy catch against the backdrop of Marathon's stunning coastal scenery.

In addition to trolling, anglers in Marathon also target kingfish using live bait or drift fishing techniques. Deploying live baits such as blue runners, cigar minnows, or pilchards on wire rigs or stinger hooks can be effective in attracting kingfish to the boat and enticing them to strike. Alternatively, anglers may drift with the current while deploying live or dead baits in the water column, allowing the scent to disperse and attract kingfish in the vicinity. Whether trolling, live bait fishing, or drift fishing, kingfish provide anglers in Marathon with an exciting and rewarding fishing experience in the vibrant waters of the Florida Keys.

We recently had the pleasure of embarking on a fishing charter with Captain Brad and his shipmate Miles, and I must say, it was an experience to remember! From start to finish, the trip was filled with excitement, laughter, and, of course, some great catches. First and foremost, Captain Brad's professionalism and expertise were evident from the moment we set foot on his well-equipped boat. The vessel itself was top-notch, complete with all the necessary fishing gear and even a bathroom—a luxury rarely found on fishing charters. This attention to detail immediately put us at ease and set the stage for an enjoyable day out on the water. Now, let's talk about Miles—what a gem! Not only was he incredibly friendly and personable, but his sense of humor added an extra layer of fun to the trip. Whether he was cracking jokes or teaching me the rules of fishing, Miles's presence truly enhanced the overall experience. It's clear that he's not just a shipmate but also a valuable member of Captain Brad's team. As for the fishing itself, we couldn't have asked for a better outing. Captain Brad navigated us to all the right spots, where we were able to reel in some impressive catches. His knowledge of the local waters and fishing techniques was evident, and it made for a successful day of angling. In summary, my fishing charter experience with Captain Brad and Miles was nothing short of exceptional. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a novice looking to try your hand at fishing, I highly recommend booking a trip with Captain Brad. You won't be disappointed! Happy fishing! Todd & Paige

Brad and Miles were great! They had our kids reeling in yellowtail not long after anchoring. We were also lucky to reel in a big grouper and a nice size kingfish. They recommended having the yellowtail cooked at Lazy Days which was fantastic. I would say if you were going out of Marathon to ask for Brad and Miles.

Pete and his wife could not have been any nicer and their boat was perfect. Pete kept us on the water longer than our trip was scheduled for trying to put some fish in the boat (we caught 1 tile fish and 3 vermillion that were just over 12 inches) I know the captain cannot control the bite as I have been on 100’s of charters however we fished with one rod the entire day! It was an electric reel since we were fishing in 600 plus feet of water. I spent almost the entire day watching my girlfriend dropping her line down and flipping the switch to bring it back up. That certainly is not what we had in mind when we booked the trip. We should have had two rods to fish with and moved into the reefs for some snapper, yellow tail or something but to deep drop the entire with one rig and zero activity was really disappointing.

Pete and Chisty were great. Although we did not catch any keepers, we had a great time trying

Captain Brad and Miles were TOP NOTCH! You do not want to miss out on fishing with these gentlemen! We went out for a half day trip and caught a ton of yellowtail snapper and some mutton grouper! We went out deeper but came up short (we had SO many chances) but that was ok! The boat was crazy fast and very high tech, these guys know where the fish are!!! Unforgettable and very enjoyable experience! Thank you Captain Brad and Miles- you guys gave us an experience we will be talking about forever, and not to mention the most delicious fish we have ever cooked in our lives- and that is saying a lot coming from Massachusetts!!!! We will definitely be coming back next year to fish with you guys again!!!❤️

Captain Pete and his deck mate Christie had a beautiful boat and despite the hot weather kept us in shade and cool! Fishing was admittedly slow today, but that didn’t keep Captain Pete from putting onto Mahi! Thanks for a great day with my boys that I will always treasure Greg

We had a great day fishing with Capt. Pete and Christy! Our teenager got his first deep sea fishing experience and reeled in a couple huge tilefish, which made for a great dinner that evening and we had plenty more to take home. We would definitely take another trip with Capt. Pete and Christy on our next trip to the area and I'll recommend them to others.

We had a blast! Captain Pete made sure we caught some great reef fish. We caught 2 Spanish mackerel, a yellow trail, a barracuda (large and mean), and a few others. It was so much fun! My 16 year old that loves to fish in Nebraska has the best time!
