trip description for Islamorada Tarpon on the Fly in Islamorada

Head out with Captain Randy to spot, stalk, and sight-cast to migrating Silver Kings on the gorgeous Florida Key's flats! This trip is not for the faint of heart! Tarpon are smart; they have great eyesight, they are very skittish, and sometimes they're flat out just not hungry! Being able to double-haul and make a good cast to the fish is just the first step—convincing a full-grown tarpon to actually eat your fly is a whole other business! Luckily, Captain Randy has spent most of his adult life throwing flies at these overgrown minnows, and knows all the best secrets, nuances, and stripping techniques to give you the best chances of hooking into the fight of your life! On a normal day, Captain Randy will meet you at the dock behind the famed Lorelei Restaurant in the heart of Islamorada. (Note: Randy keeps his boat trailered, so he can accommodate other pickup locations as well). After you hop aboard his 18' Hells Bay poling skiff (an absolute flats fishing machine) you'll head out to either the gulf side or stay inland to scout out the flats and back bays where these migrating tarpon like to pull off and rest or feed. Stalking the flats, Captain randy will either pole you up a flat, or anchor his skiff with his pole to wait for Tarpon to push through. Keeping your eye's peeled for the flashing glimmer of a rolling Tarpon, or the dark torpedo-like shadow of a cruising fish, you'll be at the bow of the boat, 12 weight in one hand, your fly in the other, poised and ready for action! It is always critical to spring into action quickly and efficiently when a tarpon is within range, and while this might sound straightforward and routine, wait till you feel how fast your heart starts racing when you hear Randy say: "1 o'clock. 40 feet." Don't forget your polarized sunglasses! These are essential out on the flats to help eliminate glare and see the fish as quickly as possible. Captain Randy can provide the rest of the gear for your trip if you need it, and will have a cooler with ice, water, and soft drinks ready to rock and roll. Feel free to bring a snack or pick up a sandwich from the Trading Post down the street on your way to the dock. You can also bring any other drinks of your choice as well to be stored in the cooler on board. Read More

trip description for Flats Fishing - 17' Maverick in Homestead

Head out with Captain Alex for an action-packed day of fly fishing in the Florida Everglades! The grass-ridden Everglades have great year-round fishing and are home to many of the prized fish that Florida is known for. On this 4 to 8-hour trip, Captain Alex will take you on a scenic trip to the inshore flats around the Flamingo Marina at the tip of the Everglades, where you'll be fly fishing for sought-after fish including Bonefish, Permit, Redfish, Snook, and Tarpon. Part of what makes fly fishing for these species so exciting is the challenge of getting such elusive fish to bite. Accurate casts are almost always required, and the windy conditions of the Florida Keys only add to the challenge. While Captain Alex is happy to give you helpful instruction to accommodate your skill level, this trip is recommended for experienced fly fishers who go out on the water more than a few times a year. Captain Alex has a listing for this same trip with traditional rods and tackle that we recommend for those who aren't quite expert casters, and we guarantee it's just as much fun! For those experienced anglers who feel comfortable enough with their fly casting, Captain Alex outlines the skills you should have down with in his "About Your Guide" section. He also requests that anglers do some research on the aspects of fly fishing for Tarpon, Bonefish and Permit prior to this trip. Captain Alex is highly skilled and even the most experienced anglers will benefit from his instruction. It may take a bit of practice, but as Alex will tell you there's nothing more rewarding than landing one of these fish! You'll be aboard a 17' Maverick HPX-V with capacity for 2 anglers. Powered by a 115 HP Mercury engine, this maneuverable boat will have no problem letting you creep up and sight-cast on some fish even in hard-to-reach waters. It comes equipped with GPS, a Wireless Trolling Motor, and an Ice Box to store your catches. Captain Alex will even clean any keepers you catch to take home for a tasty meal. Captain Alex will provide all rods, reels, tackle and fishing licenses. All you need to bring is sunglasses, sunscreen, and any food or drinks you might need. Captain Randy was kind, very knowledgeable of the area as well as where to find the giant Tarpon. We had a wonderful time talking about everything, getting to know one another and We appreciated his extensive knowledge of fishing the Islamorada waters. His equipment is new and tackle is spot on and we enjoyed every moment of our trip.

Great day out with Captain Billy B that I strongly recommend. When I said I wanted to catch trout, I was not expecting to catch over 50 on a 6 hour trip. Not only does Captain Billy know his fishing spots in the Everglades but he will also take the time to teach you how to improve your techniques. How to catch a fish at almost every cast. am sure he is great with kids. If you are looking for a monthly rental, or even buying a house in the area, he is also your man.

Cornelissen M. with Billy B. of Islamorada, Florida

Incredible fishing! I’ve never had the experience where I cast my line and within 5 seconds I get a strike. Over and over, it was constant cast and strike. Caught 20 fish in the first hour. Not only an expert guide for fishing, but Patrick is a really nice person to hang out with. Super chill to talk sports and fishing, but was cool and professional. He also recommended an awesome place for lunch where they grilled our catch! Top notch, highest recommendation possible!

Great work Captain Phil. Had a good time on the boat and caught fish all through the 8 hour day. Even when the bite slowed down captain phil ran all over to get back on the bite. We had our trout limit within the first hour of the fishing. He showed me allot of tips for casting under mangroves. Looking forward to another trip soon.

Damn great time on the water with Ben. He was willing to quickly adjust to last minute changes (remember, when you are replying to messages from Captain Experiences they might not get to the guide you are using through them). Ben got us into multiple species of fish using various methods of angling. When our time was up, we had a few "keepers" that Ben filleted up for us. It was a perfect day on the water. Thanks for the great time Ben and, more importantly, thank you for your service to our country! DO NOT HESITATE to book a trip with Ben.

Lapene M. with Ben T. of Tavernier, Florida

Had two great days on the water with captain Eric. Even though it was pretty windy Captain Eric put me in fish. Enjoyed the fishing and enjoyed my time on the water with captain Eric. Next time I'm in the Keys I will be looking forward to fishing with Captain Eric.

Bob M. with Eric S. of Islamorada, Florida

We had the best experience with Andrew. He’s a born and raised in Key Largo local and he put us on a bunch of spots where fish were biting. He was so patient when we got tangled or lost our bait and was just in general super friendly and helpful. You can tell he spends his days on the water because there’s no place he’d rather be. And he also cleaned our fish with an amazing alacrity and gave us excellent recommendations on where we could have it cooked for us by highly acclaimed local chefs. It wasn’t just fishing, Andrew was the whole package.

Erica B. with Andrew A. of Key Largo, Florida

  • ★★★★★
We truly enjoyed our fly fishing trip with Capt GW. His boat was clean and comfortable and Capt GW was very personable and knowledgeable. We had some tougher conditions with wind that allowed him to give me so much needed help and encouragement on techniques to help my skills. But alas, no adrenaline moments of catching backwater fish, just the adrenaline of trying to make the right cast in the right spot. We saw a great deal of sea life as an addition to the friendly camaraderie, and that was a bonus.
