We’ll be trolling from 7 to 12 miles offshore for King Mackerel, still within sight of land for the most part. There is a large area of hard bottom that holds bait in this area, and that is what attracts the larger predator fish. Sometimes we have to cover a lot of ground before we find a good bite, but that is the advantage of my style of trolling, we keep moving until we find the fish. This is what I recommend for folks who want to catch big fish without having to go a long way offshore or spend a long day on the boat. We will usually run about 20 miles offshore to where the higher relief ledges and wrecks can stretch for miles. Big depth changes offshore usually mean more schools of bait and more predator fish chasing them. I like to maximize fishing time so we will usually start on the inshore edge of where the best action has been and work our way further offshore. King Mackerel are the majority of what we will catch, with Amberjack, Barracuda, Mahi and possibly a Sailfish mixing in.
