trip description for 3 Person Duck Hunt in South Padre Island

This is a three person half day private bay duck hunting trip near South Padre Island, Texas. The Lower Laguna Madre has some of the finest duck hunting in the United States when conditions are right. Hunting along the edges of the fronts is absolutely the most ideal time to plan a trip. Multiple species move through this bay system on their way South. Large concentrations of redheads and pintails winter here. Other species that migrate through the South Padre area are widgeon, teal, shovelers, scaup, and others. Clients can bring their own retriever if discussed beforehand with the guide. Typically, hunt over decoy spreads consisting of at least 75 decoys. Season starts in November and goes out for two weeks after Thanksgiving Sunday. Starts again on Second Saturday in December and typically goes to last Sunday in January. Guides prefer to duck hunt in the afternoon and will provide a seasoned retriever. This is a fun activity and most clients return to go again. These are not easy hunts and do require some labor. We work with a couple of seasoned taxidermists that can also mount the trophy bird if any clients are interested at a reasonable price. Read More

What is bonnethead shark fishing in Port Isabel all about?

The bonnethead shark, often referred to as the "shovelhead" due to its unique head shape, is a common inhabitant of the waters surrounding Port Isabel, Texas. These small to medium-sized sharks are part of the hammerhead shark family and are distinguished by their slender bodies and broad, flattened heads. Bonnethead sharks can be found in a variety of habitats, including shallow coastal waters, bays, estuaries, and nearshore reefs, where they feed on crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish. Despite their resemblance to larger hammerhead species, bonnethead sharks are generally docile and pose little threat to humans.

Fishing for bonnethead sharks in Port Isabel is a popular activity among anglers, particularly those seeking an exciting and accessible shark fishing experience. Bonnethead sharks are known for their voracious appetite and willingness to take a variety of baits, making them relatively easy to target. Anglers often use bottom fishing techniques to target bonnethead sharks, deploying baited hooks or rigs with fresh fish, squid, or cut bait on heavy tackle. Once hooked, bonnethead sharks provide anglers with a spirited fight, often making strong runs and powerful headshakes.

Bonnethead sharks are typically caught year-round in the waters of Port Isabel, with peak fishing seasons occurring during the warmer months when water temperatures rise and the fish become more active. Anglers can target bonnethead sharks from boats, piers, or shorelines, with popular fishing spots including channels, flats, and nearshore reefs. Catch-and-release practices are often encouraged to ensure the conservation of bonnethead shark populations and their habitats, allowing anglers to enjoy the thrill of catching these fascinating creatures while contributing to their long-term sustainability in the waters of Port Isabel.

What are the most popular months to fish for bonnethead shark fishing in Port Isabel?

Bonnethead sharks, a smaller species of hammerhead known for their distinctive shovel-shaped heads, can be found in the waters around Port Isabel, Texas, throughout much of the year. While they may not exhibit as distinct seasonal patterns as some other species, bonnethead sharks are commonly encountered in nearshore and coastal waters, making them accessible to anglers year-round. However, certain times of the year may offer better opportunities for targeting bonnethead sharks due to factors such as water temperature and prey availability.

During the warmer months, bonnethead sharks may be more active and abundant in shallow coastal waters around Port Isabel. As water temperatures rise, these sharks are more likely to move into shallower areas in search of food, including crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish. Anglers targeting bonnethead sharks during this season may find success using baited hooks or chumming techniques to attract these curious predators.

In cooler months, bonnethead sharks may migrate to deeper waters or seek refuge in warmer areas, but they can still be encountered by anglers exploring nearshore reefs, flats, and channels. While they may not grow as large as some other shark species, bonnethead sharks provide anglers with thrilling battles once hooked, adding excitement to their fishing adventures in Port Isabel. With their unique appearance and feisty demeanor, bonnethead sharks offer anglers an opportunity to experience the thrill of shark fishing year-round in the Gulf of Mexico.

What techniques are popular for catching bonnethead shark in Port Isabel?

Fishing for bonnethead sharks in Port Isabel, Texas, typically involves employing bottom fishing techniques in areas where these sharks are known to frequent. Anglers often target bonnethead sharks in shallow coastal waters, bays, and estuaries, as well as nearshore reefs and channels. To set up for bonnethead shark fishing, anglers anchor their boats securely or fish from piers or shorelines and deploy baited hooks or rigs with fresh fish, squid, or cut bait on heavy-duty tackle.

Once the bait is deployed, anglers patiently wait for the telltale signs of a bonnethead shark bite. Bonnethead sharks are known for their keen sense of smell and are attracted to the scent of fresh bait on the ocean floor. When a bonnethead shark takes the bait, anglers carefully set the hook and prepare for a spirited battle. Despite their relatively small size compared to other shark species, bonnethead sharks are known for their agility and tenacity, often making strong runs and putting up a good fight once hooked.

Handling bonnethead sharks requires caution and respect for these creatures. Anglers should use proper handling techniques, such as using a de-hooking tool to safely remove the hook and avoiding contact with the shark's teeth. Catch-and-release practices are often encouraged to ensure the conservation of bonnethead shark populations and their habitats in the waters of Port Isabel. By employing these techniques and practices, anglers can enjoy a unique and rewarding fishing experience targeting bonnethead sharks while contributing to their long-term sustainability in the waters of Port Isabel.

Rueben did a great job!!! He put us on fish. You should try him out.

Brian P. with Ruben G. of Port Isabel, Texas

  • ★★★★★
Reuben was a very nice guy, but his view of guiding clients needs to change, l guess he fishes only go reds and specks. We only fished shipping channels with croakers on bottom. We caught a few specks, no redfish and spent most of the time cleaning seaweed off line. I mentioned to him I wanted to catch reds and mangrove snapper in the beginning. The only bait we had was croaker and I have been fishing the island many years and several other guides and we always caught a lot of the snapper, specks and redfish. He may be a good fisherman but having clients catch a lot of fish is the most important thing or at least trying, we did not, used only one type of bait, one location just different parts of it spaced out a little. I would have rather traveled 10 more miles and caught no more fish than staying in the same place catching gafftops and few specs mixed in, boring morning and in his defense we would have had a few more keepers maybe 4 or 5 if they had not raised length limit from 15 to 17”. We wound up the day with 3 keeper trout out of group of 4 on boat. Should have paid more attention to other review. Sorry will not.be using this service again

Just retuned from our trip with Captain Ruben and it was excellent. Ruben went the extra mile all morning to make sure my wife and kids all had a great experience. Ruben was a wonderful guide and made sure we were always set with bait and tips for how to catch the big fish. Of all the captains I have had, he was far and away the most patient and informative.
