trip description for 3 Person Duck Hunt in South Padre Island

This is a three person half day private bay duck hunting trip near South Padre Island, Texas. The Lower Laguna Madre has some of the finest duck hunting in the United States when conditions are right. Hunting along the edges of the fronts is absolutely the most ideal time to plan a trip. Multiple species move through this bay system on their way South. Large concentrations of redheads and pintails winter here. Other species that migrate through the South Padre area are widgeon, teal, shovelers, scaup, and others. Clients can bring their own retriever if discussed beforehand with the guide. Typically, hunt over decoy spreads consisting of at least 75 decoys. Season starts in November and goes out for two weeks after Thanksgiving Sunday. Starts again on Second Saturday in December and typically goes to last Sunday in January. Guides prefer to duck hunt in the afternoon and will provide a seasoned retriever. This is a fun activity and most clients return to go again. These are not easy hunts and do require some labor. We work with a couple of seasoned taxidermists that can also mount the trophy bird if any clients are interested at a reasonable price. Read More

What techniques are popular for catching blue marlin in South Padre Island ?

Blue marlin fishing in South Padre Island demands a combination of skill, strategy, and patience to increase the chances of a successful hookup with these powerful game fish. One primary technique employed by anglers is trolling, where boats cruise the offshore waters with a spread of large, brightly colored lures or rigged baits trailing behind. Anglers strategically vary the depth and distance of their baits to cover different parts of the water column, enticing blue marlin cruising near the surface or at deeper depths. Trolling allows anglers to cover vast areas of open water, increasing the likelihood of encountering marlin actively feeding or patrolling the area.

Live bait fishing is another effective technique utilized by anglers targeting blue marlin in South Padre Island's offshore waters. Anglers deploy live baitfish such as bonito, mullet, or mackerel, either on the surface or at varying depths using downriggers or kites. Live bait presents a natural and enticing offering for blue marlin, often leading to aggressive strikes. Anglers must carefully monitor their baits and be ready to strike at the first sign of a marlin taking the bait, as these fish are known for their lightning-fast attacks.

Additionally, sight fishing can be an exhilarating and rewarding technique for targeting blue marlin in South Padre Island. Anglers scan the surface for signs of marlin activity, such as tailing fish, feeding birds, or surface disturbances, indicating the presence of feeding marlin below. Once a marlin is spotted, anglers can carefully approach and present baits or lures directly in front of the fish, enticing a strike. Sight fishing for blue marlin requires sharp eyesight, quick reflexes, and precise casting to effectively hook into these elusive and powerful game fish in the open sea.

What other species are popular in South Padre Island?

While blue marlin may be the crown jewel of offshore fishing in South Padre Island, the area offers a rich diversity of other species to target, ensuring anglers have plenty of opportunities for thrilling catches. These colorful and energetic fish are prized for their fierce fights and delicious flesh, making them a favorite target among anglers. Dorado can be found in offshore waters around floating debris, weed lines, and underwater structures where they congregate to feed on baitfish and crustaceans. Anglers targeting dorado often use trolling techniques with brightly colored lures or rigged baits, as well as casting with live bait or artificial lures, to entice strikes from these vibrant and elusive game fish.

For anglers seeking a different kind of challenge, South Padre Island also offers opportunities to target species such as tuna, wahoo, and kingfish. Wahoo, with their lightning-fast strikes and powerful runs, provide anglers with exhilarating battles in the open waters around South Padre Island.
