trip description for Tarpon Trips in Sarasota

Head out for an awesome fishing adventure around Sarasota, FL with Captain Darius! Though he loves running further from shore to bottom fish the reefs for grouper, snapper, and pelagic species, the weather conditions have to be pretty stellar to allow this kind of trip. Thus, aboard his 23' Parker, he spends a lot of time hammering the inshore with his clients, and there are no shortage of fish (and big ones at that!) to catch! Lush grass flats abound in this area. These shallow grass flats are full of crabs, shrimp, and baitfish which in turn attract the game fish. Snook, Speckled Trout, and Redfish are the most sought after species, but you can also expect to hook into Spanish Mackerel, Jack Crevalle, Flounder, Bluefish, Ladyfish, and others! Fishing the shallow flats requires patience and attention to detail. Fish are spooky in water that is only a couple of feet deep. The beauty of Captain Darius' 23' Parker is that it has a shallow enough draft to get you good shots up on the flats and in the back bays and inlets, while also having enough room and stability to haul it further offshore on a nice day! All of Captain Darius' trips include ice, bottled water, tournament grade fishing gear, live bait, licenses, and fish cleaning at end of the trip. There is plenty of room in the cooler as well for your favorite snacks and drinks if you'd like to bring them along as well. Captain Darius' main pick-up location is on Siesta Key, but depending on where you are staying he can also meet up with you at Hart's Landing or Ken Thomspon Park Boat Ramp. Read More

What is cobia in Sarasota all about?

Cobia, also known as ling or lemonfish, are highly prized gamefish found in the waters surrounding Sarasota, Florida. Known for their powerful runs and hefty size, cobia are a favorite target among anglers seeking a thrilling fishing experience. These nomadic fish can be found in a variety of habitats, including nearshore reefs, wrecks, and along the Gulf Coast, making them accessible to both boat and shore anglers in Sarasota. During certain times of the year, cobia can also be spotted swimming near the surface, making them a tempting target for sight casting enthusiasts.

One effective technique for targeting cobia in Sarasota is bottom fishing around offshore structures such as reefs, wrecks, and oil rigs. Anglers can deploy live bait such as pinfish, mullet, or crabs on heavy tackle and present it near the bottom where cobia are known to congregate. Additionally, anglers can use artificial lures such as bucktail jigs or soft plastics to entice strikes from these opportunistic feeders. Cobia are known for their curious nature, often investigating anything that catches their eye, making them susceptible to a variety of presentation styles.

Another popular method for targeting cobia in Sarasota is sight casting. When conditions are favorable, anglers can spot cobia cruising near the surface or around structures such as buoys or channel markers. Anglers then carefully present their bait or lure ahead of the fish, enticing strikes from these powerful predators. Cobia are known for their tenacious fights, often making blistering runs and displaying acrobatic leaps when hooked. With their impressive size and thrilling battles, cobia fishing in Sarasota offers anglers an unforgettable experience on the water.

What are the most popular months to fish for cobia in Sarasota?

In Sarasota, the cobia fishing season typically peaks during the spring and fall months, although these prized gamefish can be targeted year-round. During the spring, as water temperatures begin to rise, cobia migrate along the Gulf Coast, passing through the waters off Sarasota on their journey. Anglers can expect increased activity and a higher likelihood of encountering cobia during this time, especially around nearshore reefs, wrecks, and other offshore structures where cobia congregate to feed.

Fall marks another prime season for cobia fishing in Sarasota, as these fish begin their southward migration in search of warmer waters. As temperatures gradually cool, cobia move closer to shore, providing anglers with excellent opportunities to target them from boats or even from the shore. During the fall months, cobia can often be found cruising near the surface or around structures such as buoys and channel markers, making them accessible to sight casting enthusiasts.

While spring and fall are considered peak seasons for cobia fishing in Sarasota, these fish can still be targeted successfully throughout the year. During the summer months, cobia may retreat to deeper waters or seek refuge in cooler areas to escape the heat. However, experienced anglers know that cobia can still be found around offshore structures, and adapting techniques such as bottom fishing or trolling can yield success even during the warmer months. Understanding the seasonal movements and behavior of cobia is key to maximizing success and enjoying a rewarding fishing experience in Sarasota's rich and diverse waters.
