Kingfish, Cobia and Bull Redfish can be found close to shore at most of the year.  These species along with Amberjack, Grouper, and Monster Red Snapper are typically in abundance from the 10-25 mile range….less than a 30-minute ride on most days.  The fishing gear is likewise state of the art and compact. Deep water jigging rods rated for 200lb braid, and reels with incredible torque are both light in weight, and powerful. No broomstick-sized rods, and clunky reels on this vessel.  Every consideration has been made to make your angling the experience of a lifetime.  Welcome aboard! What is cobia fishing in St. Augustine all about?

In St. Augustine, cobia are esteemed game fish known for their impressive size, strength, and hard-fighting nature, making them a sought-after target among anglers. These migratory fish are often found cruising along the coast and are known to frequent nearshore reefs, wrecks, and structure-rich areas. Cobia are recognizable by their dark brown coloration and elongated body shape, with a broad head and powerful tail fin. Anglers in St. Augustine can encounter cobia year-round, although they are most abundant during the warmer months.

The cobia fishing season in St. Augustine typically peaks during the spring and summer months, from April through September, when water temperatures rise and cobia migrate closer to the coast in search of food and suitable spawning grounds. During this time, anglers target cobia using a variety of techniques, including sight fishing, trolling, or bottom fishing around structure. Sight fishing for cobia is particularly popular, with anglers scanning the surface for cobia cruising or following large marine animals such as rays or turtles, which cobia are known to associate with.

Anglers in St. Augustine commonly target cobia using live bait such as mullet, menhaden, or pinfish, which are presented either free-lined or with a weight to keep them near the bottom. Additionally, anglers may use artificial lures such as jigs, bucktails, or soft plastics to entice strikes from cobia. When targeting cobia, anglers must be prepared for powerful runs and vigorous fights, as these fish are known for their tenacity and determination once hooked. Whether sight fishing along the coast or bottom fishing around offshore structure, anglers in St. Augustine can enjoy thrilling encounters with cobia against the backdrop of the city's scenic coastal waters.

What are the most popular months to fish for cobia in St. Augustine?

In St. Augustine, the cobia fishing season unfolds with the changing seasons and water temperatures, offering anglers distinct opportunities throughout the year. While the spring and summer months mark the peak of the cobia season in St. Augustine, anglers can still encounter cobia in the area's coastal waters during the cooler months of the year. What techniques are popular for catching cobia in St. Augustine?

In St. Augustine, anglers employ a variety of effective techniques to target cobia in the area's diverse coastal waters. One popular method is sight fishing, where anglers scan the surface for cobia cruising or following large marine animals such as rays or turtles, which cobia are known to associate with. Once spotted, anglers can cast live bait or artificial lures directly in front of the cobia to entice strikes. Sight fishing for cobia requires patience, keen observation skills, and precise casting to successfully hook these elusive fish.

Another productive technique for targeting cobia in St. Augustine is bottom fishing around offshore structure such as reefs, wrecks, or artificial reefs. Anglers commonly use live bait such as mullet, menhaden, or pinfish rigged on heavy tackle and presented either free-lined or with a weight to keep them near the bottom. Cobia are known to inhabit these structure-rich areas in search of food and shelter, making them prime targets for bottom fishing enthusiasts. Anglers must be prepared for powerful runs and vigorous fights, as cobia are known for their tenacity and determination once hooked.

Trolling is also a viable method for targeting cobia in St. Augustine, particularly when fishing along the edges of weed lines, current breaks, or offshore structure. Anglers typically troll large diving plugs, skirted baits, or artificial lures behind the boat at varying speeds to cover a wide area of water and locate schools of feeding fish. Trolling allows anglers to cover a lot of ground and present their baits at different depths in the water column, increasing the chances of enticing strikes from cobia. Whether sight fishing, bottom fishing, or trolling, anglers in St. Augustine can enjoy exhilarating encounters with cobia against the backdrop of the city's scenic coastal waters.

I set up a fishing trip with Captain Mike as part of my buddies bachelor party and could not have asked for a better experience. Capt. Mike was extremely professional and was an excellent guide. He personally reached out to me a few days before our scheduled departure to check in and see if I had any questions and give me more details. The morning of the trip Captain Mike had everything set up and waiting for us when we arrived to the dock. I was very impressed with how organized he was. The Captain wasted no time getting us on fish and the entire group started reeling them in one after the other. At the conclusion of the trip Captain Mike cleaned all of the fish we caught and bagged up the filets for us to take home. I would highly recommend Captain Mike to everyone. My buddies and I had a great time!

Five stars warranted. Skilled and personable captain with nice boat and gear, plus the requisite “local knowledge.” Did a half day with trip tailored by the captain to match our specific inshore interests and to maximize fishing time. Had continuous action, and it was fun to see my daughter catch a nice mixed bag of fish species she hadn’t seen. Highly recommend Captain Matt.

Wow!! IF YOU WANT TO GO SEA FISHING YOU HAVE TO GO WITH CAPTAIN NICK!!! So we turned up to a pretty chilly and windy meeting spot, thinking why hasn’t this been postponed to another day, surely we can’t got out in this weather. How wrong we were. Captain Nick arrived early assured us we would be fine and we would be fishing the river and not going out to the ocean, but he was pretty sure we would still catch some fish. When we started fishing within the 1st half hour we had caught 2 huge fish , the rest of the afternoon was spent tracking fish and catching them. Captain Nick and his mate answered all questions that were asked of them, their knowledge of the area and their love of fishing was clearly evident. They made this fishing trip, one that a 12 year old kid from England will remember forever. Thankyou Captain Nick for the experience

We went out with Captain Chris and had an amazing experience! Our party consisted of four people with a grandmother and three teenage grandchildren. With Chris’ knowledge and skills, each of us were able to catch at least one shark. He prepared the one we kept and we were able to have it cooked at a nearby restaurant for lunch!

We had an unbelievable time with Captain James and I can't wait to fish with him again. Was in the area for a wedding and was looking to head offshore so we booked with James. He kept in touch leading up to our trip and let us know the kings were running. We headed out through the St. Mary's jetties and set up on the troll after catching some baitfish on the buoys. There were a couple other boats out and no one seemed to get a bite, the kings just weren't biting. From there, Capt. James took us to one of his snapper spots and we reeled em in on every drop. Everyone caught fish and James was super patient helping one buddy who was offshore for the first time. James was a blast to fish with and was super knowledgeable about the area and its history. His center console split the chop like butter. Will be back! - Jonathan with Captain Experiences
