trip description for Tampa Bay Inshore/Nearshore Classic in Tampa

Head out for an awesome fishing adventure around Holmes Beach, FL with Captain Joe! On this trip, you'll double up and chase classic inshore species such as Redfish, Black Drum, Mangrove Snapper, Snook, and Spotted Trout, then head a little further out to go after gamefish like Cobia, Spanish Mackerel, and Jack Crevalle. The shallow grass flats in this are full of crabs, shrimp, and baitfish which in turn attract the big gamefish, so you'll have no shortage of opportunities for that personal best! You'll be fishing from the deck of Captain Joe's 23' Ranger bay boat, an ideal vessel for fishing these waters. Fishing the shallow flats requires patience and attention to detail. Fish are spooky in water that is only a couple of feet deep. The beauty of Captain Joe's bay boat is that it has a shallow enough draft to get you good shots up on the flats and in the back bays and inlets, while also having enough room and stability to haul it further out on a nice day! All of Captain Joe' trips include top-tier fishing gear, live bait, licenses, and fish cleaning at end of the trip. There is plenty of room in the cooler as well for your favorite snacks and drinks if you'd like to bring them along as well. Of course, we always recommend that you bring sunscreen, proper clothing, and a pair of sunglasses as well! Read More

What techniques are popular for catching snook in Crystal River?

Fishing for snook in Crystal River, Florida, requires a blend of strategic techniques and patience to entice these elusive predators into striking. One effective method for targeting snook is using live bait, such as pilchards, mullet, or shrimp, presented near structure where snook are known to congregate. Anglers often position themselves along mangrove-lined estuaries, docks, bridges, and other areas with submerged structure, casting their bait close to these areas and allowing it to drift naturally with the current. This technique can entice aggressive strikes from hungry snook as they ambush passing prey.

Artificial lure fishing is another popular technique for targeting snook in Crystal River. Anglers use a variety of lures, including soft plastic jigs, crankbaits, and topwater plugs, to mimic the movement of baitfish and trigger strikes from snook. When fishing with artificial lures, anglers typically cast their lures around structure and retrieve them with a twitching or erratic motion to imitate the behavior of wounded baitfish. This method requires skill and finesse but can be highly effective for enticing snook to strike, especially during periods of high activity.

Nighttime fishing is also productive for targeting snook in Crystal River, particularly during the warmer months when snook are more active. Anglers often use lighted docks, bridges, and other structures as attractants to draw in baitfish and snook. Live bait or artificial lures presented around these illuminated areas can entice strikes from opportunistic snook. Did a nice job trying to get us on fish. Hustled his rear off. Seemed a bit overwhelming having 4 on the boat who had never fished the flats before and several being relative novices for just 1 crew member. As a result about 1/3 the time 1-2 of our party weren’t fishing as we could have been. He was working hard though … much appreciated! Would highly recommend a 2nd crew member when there are inexperienced people it will be a tight fit though but think it would improve the experience. Tyson was nice, polite, knowledgeable and very patient thanks for the experience. Would highly recommend especially if you’ve done this type of fishing before. Thanks Tyson!

We had Captain Brett for our day of fishing. What an amazing day we had. We caught multiple fish we could keep and multiple fish we couldn’t keep. We had the experience of seeing multiple species that we didn’t catch. We saw a bull shark, a Goliath Grouper, a loggerhead turtle, and a manatee. We hooked in to a giant. Watching Brett and my brother work together to get this fish in was spectacular. The team work that it took as well as the skill. He was also great for those of us that were less experienced. He was so pleasant and kind while helping me change my techniques so I caught fish verses continuously just feeding the fish. He did great with my teenage son. Brett is a great communicator. We will go with Brett again.

Shellie K. with Cameron F. of Clearwater, Florida

Had a great day fishing with Captain Nick Hughs! Trip started on time with nearly perfect weather. Boat was ready to go with all the bait and tackle we needed. Although the fish were hard to find, we did land a nice Snook. Nick worked his fanny off trying to get us on the fish. He’s a great Capt. and great host!

We had a great afternoon of fishing with Captain Wade in Tampa Bay; catching snook and redfish. Wade knows the bay well and he put us in the right spot for the conditions. We were originally scheduled for a Sunday morning trip but when the weather was not looking favorable, he offered to put in an extra long day and take us on Saturday afternoon. He works well with all skill levels and I highly recommend him for your next fishing trip!
