trip description for Reel Fun Bay and Flats Trip in Rockport

Captain Jason will customize your trip to your preferences. On your pre-trip call he will advise what has been working recently, but will fish the way you prefer. Fishing out of the boat with cut or live bait for reds, speckled trout or black drum. Drifting the flat with live shrimp under popping corks or lures and soft plastics. Wading shorelines with lures or live bait. It is your trip and wants you to have fun. He fishes primarily for reds, speckled trout and black drum. If you catch a limit of the targeted species or they are simply not bitting, he will always look for feeding fish to catch. His goal is to keep your fishing rods bent and you having fun for the full 6 hours. Typically he launches from Cove Harbor North next to Paradise Key Restaurant. On the pre-trip call launch locations can be changed, depending on the type of trip or bay to be fished. All launch locations changes will be agreed to by both parties on pre-trip call. For parties larger than 4 people he works either several boats to accommodate big parties. Read More

What is fishing in Mesquite Bay about?

Nestled along the Gulf Coast of Texas, Mesquite Bay offers anglers an enticing blend of saltwater fishing opportunities in a picturesque coastal setting. Situated near the town of Rockport, this expansive bay system is renowned for its diverse marine life and productive fishing grounds. Anglers flock to Mesquite Bay year-round to target a variety of saltwater game fish, including speckled trout, redfish, flounder, and black drum, among others. Whether casting from the shoreline, wading in the shallows, or exploring the bay by boat, anglers are treated to a wealth of angling options in this coastal paradise.

One of the highlights of fishing in Mesquite Bay is the chance to pursue trophy-sized speckled trout, which are known to frequent its shallow flats and marshy shorelines. These elusive fish provide a thrilling challenge for anglers, requiring stealth and patience to entice them with artificial lures or live bait. In addition to speckled trout, redfish are another popular target in Mesquite Bay, with schools of these hard-fighting fish often found prowling the shallows in search of prey. Whether sight casting to tailing redfish in the shallows or targeting them around submerged structure, anglers can enjoy exciting encounters with these powerful game fish.

Beyond the thrill of the catch, fishing in Mesquite Bay offers anglers a chance to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Texas Gulf Coast. With its tranquil waters, scenic marshlands, and abundant wildlife, the bay provides a serene backdrop for a day of fishing and exploration. Whether observing shorebirds wading in the shallows, watching dolphins play in the bay, or simply taking in the stunning coastal scenery, anglers can enjoy a memorable outdoor experience in Mesquite Bay.

What are the most popular months to fish in Mesquite Bay?

Fishing seasons in Mesquite Bay are influenced by a combination of environmental factors, such as water temperature, tidal patterns, and fish migration patterns. Spring marks the beginning of prime fishing season in Mesquite Bay as water temperatures rise and marine life becomes more active. Anglers eagerly anticipate the arrival of speckled trout and redfish, which become more abundant in the bay as they move inshore to spawn and feed. During this time, anglers can enjoy productive fishing opportunities by targeting these prized game fish in the shallow flats, marshy shorelines, and around submerged structures.

As summer unfolds, fishing in Mesquite Bay remains productive, with anglers continuing to target speckled trout, redfish, and other saltwater species. However, anglers may need to adjust their tactics as water temperatures increase and fish behavior changes. During the summer months, early mornings and late evenings often provide the best fishing conditions, as fish are more active during cooler periods of the day. Additionally, anglers may find success by fishing deeper channels and drop-offs where fish seek refuge from the heat.

Fall brings cooler temperatures and changing conditions to Mesquite Bay, signaling the transition to the fall fishing season. As water temperatures begin to cool, speckled trout and redfish become more active, feeding voraciously in preparation for the winter months. Anglers can capitalize on this feeding frenzy by targeting fish in the shallows and along grassy shorelines, using a variety of artificial lures and live bait to entice strikes. Fall also marks the start of the flounder run in Mesquite Bay, with these tasty flatfish moving into the bay in search of spawning grounds. Overall, fall offers some of the most exciting fishing opportunities of the year in Mesquite Bay, with anglers enjoying ample action and the chance to reel in trophy-sized fish.

What types of fishing are popular in Mesquite Bay?

Fishing in Mesquite Bay offers a variety of options for anglers looking to reel in a diverse range of saltwater species. One popular method is wade fishing, where anglers don waders and walk into the shallow waters of the bay to cast their lines. This approach allows anglers to stealthily navigate the bay's flats and marshes, targeting speckled trout, redfish, and other game fish in their natural habitat. Wade fishing also provides anglers with the flexibility to explore different areas of the bay and adapt to changing conditions throughout the day.

For anglers seeking a more mobile fishing experience, boat fishing in Mesquite Bay offers the opportunity to cover larger areas of water and access remote fishing spots that may be inaccessible from shore. Whether fishing from a kayak, skiff, or larger boat, anglers can explore the bay's channels, grassy flats, and oyster reefs in search of trophy-sized fish. Boat fishing allows anglers to experiment with different techniques, such as trolling, drifting, or anchoring, to maximize their chances of success and target a variety of saltwater species.

Another popular option for fishing in Mesquite Bay is pier fishing, which provides anglers with a convenient and accessible way to enjoy saltwater fishing without the need for a boat. Several piers and jetties dot the shoreline of Mesquite Bay, offering anglers the chance to cast their lines into deeper water and target a variety of fish species, including speckled trout, redfish, and flounder. Pier fishing is especially popular with families and novice anglers, providing a relaxed and social atmosphere where anglers can enjoy the thrill of the catch while taking in the scenic views of the bay.

This was our first time fishing in the intercoastal. We had a great time fishing with James. He put us on fish at the first stop and moved us on to the next spot as soon as the action slowed down. He provided quality live bait and showed us effective techniques. He took care of baiting, netting our catch and otherwise took great care of us. James was jovial, easy-going and incredibly patient with us. We had a blast.

Capt. Larry is a true professional. He quickly developed realistic expectation and promptly delivered and then some. My two teenagers and I showed up never having done anything like this before. Capt. Larry explained that conditions were not ideal, but we should still catch a few. First thing took us to a proven spot, it took a little bit, but my 13-year-old daughter picked up a couple in the first 3-+- minutes. Larry knew immediately what was going on with the fish and put us all in position, we stayed pretty much in the same spot for the rest of the day and did very well. All we caught wee Redfish; we caught several in the 5.5#+ class. We had a great day. Or second day was a good day as well, each of us caught enough fish to feel like we knew what we were doing. Larry has a great way about him to make you feel comfortable and is very capable. We will come back again as long as we can fish with him. MT

This was one of the best things I ever booked. This was a surprise for my boyfriend and he had an awesome time. I came into this with very limited knowledge of fishing and left extremely confident in the fishing skills Larry had taught me. We each caught one fish, however that’s because we saw dolphins!!! I told Larry I really would like to see more dolphins and man he delivered!! Dolphins swam straight up to the boat it was amazing to see them in their natural habitat. Larry was very interested in what WE wanted to do and he was an amazing guide. I will for sure be bringing my father in law back to fish with Larry. 100% recommend!!!

Everything went well and I had a lot of fun. Larry explained that the February freeze kinda depleted much of the population of fish and the Park Game & Wildlife had to get stricter on being able to keep the fish now. But I still had lots of fun.

First time doing a fishing trip. Captain Larry was very welcoming. He sent me reminders the day before the trip and called me to talk about how the trip would go, suggestions, and questions I had. He was very informational with showing me the basics of fishing and I learned to cast perfectly. Ended up catching a few fish!

Captain Larry was great at teaching us how to wade fish and fish with lures instead of live bait. He was very patient with the kids and we all caught fish! It was a great trip overall.
